Nikon Coolpix 3100 announcement clippings

OVERVIEW

Nikon have announced two new compact and lightweight Coolpix digital still cameras – the Coolpix 3100 and the Coolpix 2100, aimed at anyone wanting ease of use and fun with their digital photography. These are friendly, versatile and barrier-free models, even for those who are using a digital camera for the first time.

Weighing in at only 150g and comparable in size to a pack of playing cards, the 2.0 megapixel Coolpix 2100 and 3.2 megapixel Coolpix 3100 still have room for a 1.5 inch monitor for instant review of results and a 3 x optical with an additional 4x digital zoom for landscapes vistas to intimate close-ups. Small in size and weight, the cameras feature the latest generation of Nikon's optical design and image processing technology resulting in outstanding pictures of strong, vibrant
colour and sharp detail. The resolution of the Coolpix 2100 model will produce prints of up to A4 and the Coolpix 3100 stretches this by a further 50% to B4.

They're packed with the kind of features that make digital photography such fun and so immediate. For example, the clever Photo trim function enables images to be cropped while they're still in the camera, and sepia, monochrome and halo filters, allow so many creative possibilities.

Capturing images is made easy by the general-use AUTO Mode and 14 Scene Modes, four of which offer a Scene Assistance function for perfectly composed pictures. In Macro Mode, the cameras can shoot as close as 4cm (1.6 in.) from a subject.

Both cameras feature Continuous Shooting Mode and four Movie Modes, including one capable of recording a clip as large as 640 x480 pixels. The Coolpix 3100 captures up to 40 seconds of smaller-size video in colour, whilst the Coolpix 2100 can capture up to 15 seconds. Both can capture movie clips in B/W or sepia. Using the Movie Trim feature, individual frames can be extracted from the movie and saved as stills.

The Small Picture function creates reduced-size pictures that are perfect for e-mailing or Web posting, while the Date imprinting function allows users to date a picture at the time of shooting.

The Quick Review button allows images to be viewed right away on the LCD monitor while maintaining live-action viewing. The Transfer function simplifies uploading image data to a computer.

Both these new Coolpixes come complete with essential accessories, including a battery and charger, a CompactFlash™ card, a USB cable, and new Nikon View 6.0 software. This latest version of Nikon's software incorporates many improvements including even easier image identification and grouping, simple email and web page creation, plus, most importantly – an Auto Red-Eye reduction feature, the most efficient system currently available.
