The Sony portable 40GB HARD DISK PHOTO STORAGE solution - digital camera and photography news

Weybridge, 25 August, 2004 – Sony Europe's Storage Solutions & IT Peripherals division today announced the addition of an innovative digital imaging storage solution to its “photo storage” range of PC peripherals and recording media. Offering 40GB capacity, the HARD DISK PHOTO STORAGE drive (HDPS-M1) is the next logical step in the portable storage genre, providing consumer and business users alike with the ability to store up to 26,000 high resolution digital photos(1) and other data on the go.

When on holiday or away from the home or office, precious pictures can now be downloaded to the HDPS-M1 drive instead of being deleted off the camera's storage media in order to free up additional memory. The perfect companion for owners of Sony CyberShotTM and HandycamTM cameras, the HDPS-M1 comes with versatile multimedia slots compatible with MemoryStick, CompactFlash and MicroDrive media. The Simple Copy function of the HARD DISK PHOTO STORAGE drive allows the fast transfer of pictures from the camera's storage media to the drive at the touch of a button.

On return, a USB2.0 port enables the easy connection to a Windows or Macintosh PC or notebook where the Plug&Play HARD DISK PHOTO STORAGE drive will be recognised as an external storage device(2). Pictures can be downloaded from the HDPS-M1drive to the computer where they are automatically organised by the Photo Diary software so they can be easily viewed by day, week or month(3). Bundled with the drive, Photo Diary also provides a basic editing tool that adds an extra dimension to the digital experience by offering the option to create photo books, print pictures or e-mail family, friends or work colleagues. “With the HARD DISK PHOTO STORAGE drive users can take as many digital photos as they want while travelling without having to conserve storage space or purchase additional memory cards,” commented, Matt Swinney, Product Manager in Sony Europe's Storage Solutions and IT Peripherals division. “Furthermore, for mobile workers, the HDPS-M1 can also be used to back up notebooks – ensuring that all precious data is protected whilst on the move!”

Weighing in at only 295 grams, the palm size HDPS-M1 drive has a durable anti-shock design, maximising the benefits of its portability without fear of data loss. Capable of use for up to one hour when fully charged the HDPS-M1 has a Lithium-Ion battery with intelligent “run and re-charge” capability once plugged back into the PC or connected to the AC adapter. The HARD DISK PHOTO STORAGE drive comes with the Photo Diary software kit for Windows, AC power adapter and power chord, USB cable and a carrying case and hand strap. Customers will be able to buy the HDPS-M1 directly from the Sony Style online store ( and through distributors and resellers from September 2004. Sony will exhibit the product at photokina in Cologne, Germany which takes place from 28 September until 3 October 2004.
