Philips reveals new design innovations at the 2006 Simplicity Event

Last week Philips Electronics unveiled new and innovative concepts based on its sense and simplicity brand positioning at the 2006 Philips Simplicity Event at London's ExCeL exhibition centre. Some of the new concepts presented here were Family Album, a spontaneously co-created photo album, shared by a community of distant relatives and friends through interactive photo frames, and u-Wand, a revolutionary way of accessing and managing content, enabling the user to interact with their digital environment...

This concept looks at new ways of connecting with others and enriching social dynamics as intuitively and spontaneously as possible, allowing people to fully concentrate on sharing content with family and friends rather than on the technical challenges and ways of doing it.

Concepts being demonstrated include:

Storyteller

– use any book to tell a story to children, bringing it to ‘life' with this torch and lantern, to enhance their imagination with audio and visual clues.

Family Album

– a spontaneously co-created photo album, shared by a community of distant relatives and friends through interactive photo frames that also allow for intuitive re-editing, and smart display options.

In Touch

an interactive touch-sensitive display as an alternative to voice mails and family messages stuck on the fridge.

uWand

A Philips vision of a revolutionary way of accessing and managing content, enabling the user to interact with their digital environment in a natural and self-expressive way. A simple stroke of the uWand allows users to intuitively point at a device and to scroll, select, play and move elements.

The uWand is a simple instrument to control all content at home; from music to films and from TV channels to family photographs. Philips hopes that the uWand will stimulate product designers to rethink user interfaces to make them more simple and designed around the consumer.

Philips is planning to initiate a dialog within the electronics industry to introduce the uWand into the consumer market.

The uWand is still being developed and its launch timeframe is under discussion.
